Full Site Editing (FSE) is a WordPress feature available since version 5.9 (2022) that extends Gutenberg block editing to the entire site structure. With FSE, headers, footers, page templates, and global styles can be edited directly in the WordPress dashboard without PHP knowledge.

What's included in Full Site Editing?

FSE includes the Site Editor (editing templates and template parts), the Style Editor (global colors, typography, spacing), block templates for pages and archive pages, and Block Patterns as reusable layouts. Everything is based on the Gutenberg block system.

FSE vs. classic theme customization

Classic WordPress themes use PHP templates and the Customizer. FSE block themes replace PHP templates with HTML files containing block markup and replace the Customizer with the visual Site Editor. FSE themes are more portable and easier to maintain — but not all plugins are compatible with the old Customizer system.
